Your Questions Answered: Self Promotion

I recently received an email seeking self-promotion advice and I wanted to share it with you!

Question: Hi…I am a “beginner” at pr and wanted to focus on up and coming fashion designers. I have my experience in the south Florida Caribbean music scene but wanted to start venturing out into fashion. I was hoping you could offer some advice/suggestions. I’m having a difficult time going outside my circle of friends and finding prospective clients. How did you go about finding your initial clients when you first started? I found your site off of pr couture’s site and found your website to be really nice. I wanted to ask someone who perhaps has been in my position before. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Farah,

Thanks for reaching out to me.  When seeking new clients you may want to start locally since your still trying to get your feet wet.  It’s really hard to find people randomly so you need to put yourself out there by networking!   Try attending events, seminars, mixers etc.  You should get some inexpensive business cards made with your company name (if you don’t have a company name that’s ok).  You may also want to create a new email account specifically for your freelance business in order to keep it as professional as possible.  Solicit friends and family to spread the word around.  This could really get you started in the right direction and help spread the word that your starting to do Fashion PR.     Try  joining online groups like Linked In, Meetup.com, Facebook and Twitter. By  connecting with industry professionals you will be surprised how large your circle will grow from there.

If you have any questions or seeking advice please feel free to email me at nadiamurdock@manchesterpublicrelations.com.
