When did you open your boutique?

Exactly a year ago: June 2009.

Do you recall the first design that you ever made?

I took a handbag class at the YMCA about 8 years ago where I was able to start exploring my interest in handbag design. My first project was a bucket tote bag with wooden handles. It had a structured leather bottom and collar and the body was a peach-colored crushed velvet. It took ages to make because the whole thing was hand-stitched, but I learned a lot about handbag construction.

Why were you inclined to make eco-friendly handbags?

I’ve always been interested in the environment and the ways we can all do our part to help preserve it. The act of acquiring more stuff is inherently bad for the planet, but people aren’t about to stop shopping. So, I wanted to make a product that was beautiful and stylish, yet considered it’s environmental impact. It’s difficult to be completely “green,” but I try to choose materials that are less harmful than those typically used in the industry, such as hemp, organic cotton and deerskin.

How would you describe your typical customer?

Because I’m located in a popular NYC neighborhood (the East Village) I get tourists from all over the world coming in. I also sell jewelry by local designers so people can get a really special NYC souvenir. I also get locals shopping here who appreciate buying something that supports their local economy. My customer tends to be someone who likes to find that interesting unique piece – something no one else will have.

What is your favorite design from your upcoming collection?

I just released the Bayside collection which has 2 colors that I’m in love with: a rich purple and a bright turquoise. My favorite bag is probably the Scallop clutch done in the purple deerskin with natural hemp canvas. I like the contrast of the rough canvas with the soft purple…and the style is very summery.

What are your future plans for Teich Design?

I just went live with my brand new e-commerce enabled website, so the immediate plan is to get most of the pieces I carry in the shop up on there so people can shop remotely. I’ve got a lot up now, but not all of the jewelry. I’d like to also eventually get back to wholesaling my own collection. I took a break to focus on the shop, but do want to begin selling in other boutiques again soon.
