How To Be A Fashion Writer

The most successful fashion writers spend their days reviewing collections at runway shows, researching the latest trends, attending events and meeting with designers. But, let’s get your dream straight, because the above image may not be true for new fashion writers. Only a select few enjoy those privileges, since their world revolved around producing good copy quickly. Fashion writers are paid to produce editorial content for media outlets such as magazines, websites, newspapers, blogs and TV stations. Traditionally, fashion writers are either employed full-time by a print or web publication, or are employed on a freelance basis. Here’s how to turn your dream career as a fashion writer into a reality.

Enroll in fashion school. Given the competition for fashion jobs, a college degree in Fashion Journalism is highly recommended. However, you do not need to have a degree to break into the fashion industry. If you have excellent English communication and writing skills, wait no more!

Familiarize yourself with the industry, its trends and terminology by studying fashion magazines, journals, trends forecast reports and books written by experts in the field. To locate recent fashion trends, interview established fashion designers, professors at fashion schools, local boutiques and industry analysts.

Start your own blog. Why a blog? Because you can update your site almost daily with new fashion content, while attracting loyal readers. Keep your blog design simple and focus on creating great content. Buy your own domain name, if it’s available, or pick a phrase that’s related to the kind of fashion writing you want to do. Blogs are an excellent marketing tool for new fashion writers.

Network with other fashion experts. It is essential that you have good contacts with people in the fashion industry. Create an extensive database with all of your contacts information including their social media profiles, as well as for editors, possible partners and for magazines and publishers you like. Talk to your network regularly to build the relationship and possibly pick up assignments.

Create brilliant writing samples from scratch. Talented fashion writers partner with editors, photographers, models, celebrities, designers, public relations specialists and others who make up fashion’s inner circle to develop their own stories and make their pieces fun, interesting and engaging to readers. When applying for gigs, submit your writing clips along with your letter of introduction to fashion editors. The clips you publish will begin your portfolio and that will help you obtain more paid gigs in the future.

IFB Conference:Independent Fashion Bloggers

The Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference on September 7^th at Milk Studios in New York, NY was a day filled with a series of panels and a wealth of information being offered by some of the top experts in the fashion industry. Here are some tips I picked up at the IFB Conference!

What made you want to create pieces that focused on spiritual messages from Kabbalah?

I’ve been a student of Kabbalah for many years and I am so inspired by the messages and meditations that I wanted to find an artistic platform to communicate and share what has touched my heart and my soul so deeply.

With your experience as a gemologist and your fascination in gemstones do you feel that this has helped your collection have a unique flare?

Yes, definitely, as I feel comfortable using gemstones that are uncommon and many other people wouldn’t feel comfortable using them because of an unfamiliarity. Since I have an understanding of their composition and energy I dare to use these special stones

People seem to have gravitated to your jewelry line including Donna Karen and your line can also be found at high end stores including The Plaza Hotel and Bloomingdales. What do you think attracts the public to your collection?

People are drawn to the aramaic secret codes engraved on my jewels which are considered to be angelical influences or angel entities…these forces subconsciously attract people unknowingly in addition to the obvious aesthetic handmade raw quality appearing antiquated

Your men’s collection includes very strong statement pieces; do you feel that this represents your male demographic?

Not necessarily…those pieces are very runway, editorial and high fashion. I do have a line that is much more basic and conservative but tres chic..these pieces are very much unisex as well..

There is a portion of your bio where you discuss The Spiritual Roots of your jewelry, what does that mean for those of us that are not familiar with your line?

“Spiritual Roots” means that the engravings on my jewelry are inspired by my study of Kabbalah which is simply all about the spiritual laws of the universe, the main law being “Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself”

Aubrey Lenyard is the founder and creator of Fashionable Notes which designs eco-friendly market bags for Fashionista’s to shop in style. This Atlanta based company design company makes it fashionable to carry reusable grocery bags.

What is your background in fashion?

I’m a former custom bridal and evening gown designer. For 10 years I owned my own boutique in trendy area of Atlanta called Midtown and during that time I also designed a line of bridesmaid dresses that sold in bridal shops throughout the Southeast.

What inspired you to jump into green fashion?

After purchasing several re-usable bags, I noticed they were all the same…..plain, boring and average. My design instinct kicked in and I began to think, how fabulous it would be to have re-usable bags that were creative and most importantly, stylish.
