One on One Interview with Kedra Hart owner of Opus Oils

Opus Oils aims at bringing back the feminine flare to perfume and they have done just that.  Keep reading to learn about Kendra Hart and the concept behind Opus Oils.

The perfume parlour is about bringing back the glamour of perfume.  Why do you think perfume has lost that style and do you feel that it’s making it’s way back?

I think that as the Perfume Culture became more & more commercialized, the glamour began to fade.

Back in the day people visited Perfumeries for their scents & sundries.  Something was lost along the way as this type of intimate environment morphed into the modern day department store atmosphere, where the focus was placed on the product and not the shopping experience.

Personally I prefer a shopping experience that is more intimate and personalized, and judging by the reaction we have been getting form our customers, I’m not the only one!

How has the LA community responded to the perfume parlour?

We get people coming in all the time “Thanking” us for being here!  The environment we’ve built seems to make people happy, and we get a lot of repeat business – once people discover us they usually come back and bring their friends.

One night I was closing up and heard some guys passing by out front, one of them says to the other, “This place is like a little hidden gem of Hollywood…”  I loved hearing that!

How can someone determine what’s the right scent for them?

The most important thing is that it smells good on them.  Because of body chemistry, Ph and all that, scents will behave differently on everybody, so just because a perfume smells divine on your girlfriend doesn’t mean it will smell good on you too!   It is important that you be honest with yourself when choosing a perfume – and always try it on to see how it mixes with your own body chemistry.

The way ones fashion style defines who they are do think the same goes for the scents that women are drawn to?

Absolutely!  Because the olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling, it’s sometimes called the “emotional brain.”  Smell can call up memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously.  Scent can be a very powerful tool in terms of leaving a lasting impression on people….  Your Signature Scent is like your style, part of the overall package that you present to people, an extension of your internal ”Essence.”

What are the benefits oils vs. perfume?

The term “Perfume” actually refers to the concentration of “Juice” to “Carrier” in a finished fragrance product.  Our choice to use Fractionated Coconut oil instead of Alcohol as a carrier was based on several different reasons.  Number One being that Fractionated Coconut Oil is actually extremely conditioning to your skin!  It is a natural preservative and has an unlimited shelf life.  Alcohol evaporates faster, so scents based in fractionated coconut oil can tend to last longer than alcohol based scents.  Also, oil based scents tend to stay closer to your skin – more in your personal space zone than alcohol based scents, which is something that many people find very appealing.  I should mention that we do offer the option of a Certified Organic Neutral Grape Alcohol carrier to our customers that prefer their scents to be in an alcohol base.

What exciting things do you have coming up for Opus Oils in 2010?

Well 2010 has been full of excitement all ready!  In February we debuted our new “Scents Of Imagination” ~ A Bespoke Perfume Design System wherein the client joins the perfumer on an aromatic journey towards the creation of their very own unique fragrance.  We launched on Valentines Day at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills!

I designed this unique system in response to the many requests I was getting for a mid-range Custom Fragrance option.  While everybody loves the idea of a Custom Fragrance, in this day and age, not everyone is able to afford the high cost of a Bespoke Perfume designed completely from scratch.  With our“Scents Of Imagination” System, clients select aromatic chords from pre-blended Bases, which simplifies the custom blending process considerably – making it possible for the client to leave the Custom Blending Session with a finished product (a Bespoke Perfume designed from scratch takes a month minimum to develop.  Pricing for a Bespoke Perfume designed from scratch starts at $500.00, and goes up depending upon the specific ingredients that are used and how complicated the blend gets.  It can be a very expensive and time consuming process.)

Also new in 2010, we have launched our Fancy Atomizer Bottles!  They are lovely vintage reproductions and are perfect dressing table accents.

Another project in the works for Opus Oils is a collaboration with Coffin Case (Rock & Roll Lifestyle Brand), with a soon to be released collection of “Vampira” Perfumes based on the Legendary Maila Nurmi (1922–2008) (1950′s TV horror hostess and star of Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space”)

Opus Oils Tutorial

Name three of your scents that would be considered for a night on the town.

Absinthia - I got a letter from someone once telling me that she was out one night and literally followed a scent trail around the block until she caught up with one of our clients who was wearing Absinthia…  Absinthia is a “fancy” fun scent that never fails to get tons of compliments.  The keys notes are Wisteria, Absinthe (Wormwood), Sugar & Vanilla.  It is sexy and girly at the same time!

Jitterbug - Smoky, Sexy, Voluptuous Jasmine!  Jasmine is a known aphrodisiac and a crowd pleaser.

Vamp- Sexy Velvet Gardenia, with a smoky Vanilla dry-down….  This is a great “Date Scent!”

Which three of the scents would be an ideal everyday perfume/oil?

Kitten is a fresh citrus floral that is my first go to scent for every day wear.  It makes me feel fresh and happy.  Plus, it has a Pink Grapefruit note (They say that grapefruit makes a woman seem 6 years younger than her age!)

Lady Death - This scent is soft and feminine, clean and floral, and a bit powdery.

Island - A Natural Perfume from our Island Girl Collection – it smells like a Hawaiian Garden on a hot day!  I instantly feel that “relaxed summer day when I was a kid” feeling when I put on Island.  It is a “vacation in a Bottle.”

If a woman were trying a scent out of her comfort zone which would you suggest?

One fun thing to try when wanting to go out of your comfort zone scent wise is to try a scent that is geared for the opposite gender….  Some of our “Men’s” Scents that I often reach for are Eros (Lime/Amber) from our Divine Collection, Absintheo (Sandalwood & Fig) from our Absinthe Collection, & Voodoo (a spicy Incense blend) from our Fetish Collection…

Another fun thing to try is “Scent Layering.”  Mix your favorite scent with something daring like a ”Leather Scent” (try Spank from our Fetish collection)….

Lastly what scent will entice the opposite sex?

Our scent that gets the most reaction from both sexes is “Dirty Sexy Wilde.”  All those “Animal” notes seem to tap into an unconscious primal place.  And the feedback we get from our clients is that it definitely generates a positive “romantic” response.
